BC Timber Sales (BCTS) manages about 20 per cent of the province’s allowable annual cut for Crown timber, generating economic prosperity for British Columbians through the safe, sustainable development and auction of Crown timber.  BCTS operates in 33 communities and directly supports over 8,000 jobs across BC.

Data from our operations are used to help determine the market value of the timber harvested from public land and ensures British Columbians receive fair value from their timber resources.

BCTS also supports government’s commitment to true, lasting reconciliation with First Nations in BC as we move toward fully adopting and implementing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

The goal of BCTS is to provide credible representative price and cost benchmark data for the market pricing system through auctions of timber harvested from public land in BC. BCTS has three objectives supporting its goal:

A great opportunity to take the next step in your career

Provincial Permanent Sample Plot (PSP) data have been collected in the natural forests in BC since 1910s. Those data were recently migrated into a newly developed Oracle database named Inventory Sample Management Consolidation (ISMC). For that reason, a new PSP compiler is under development to summarize those data. The purpose of this job posting is to support the development of the new PSP compiler by integrating the height/DBH calculator from old PSP compiler (written in SAS) to the new ISMC compiler (written in R).

The candidate is expected to either rewrite the old height/DBH calculator in the R environment or build an interface in the R environment to call the old calculator.  This is a four-month co-op position!

Note that the successful candidate may be eligible for the Pacific Leaders Tuition Grant: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/careers-myhr/all-employees/career-development/pacific-leaders/co-op-grant
