Next, we need to write an effective job posting.

Writing a job posting that will attract the right candidates to the job can seem tricky. Here’s Women in Leadership’s top tips to make the most out of your job posting:

  • Use simple language – no one wants to read through too much jargon. Using specific terms relevant to the industry is fine, but overstuffing your posting with keywords may cause candidates to lose interest.
  • Talk directly to the job seeker! Avoid using terms such as “the incumbent” – use the word “you” instead to catch candidates’ attention! Candidates may feel more connected to the job which may motivate them to apply.
  • Avoid common phrases such as “the right candidate will have the opportunity to work in a fast paced environment.” After reading phrases such as these a million times while on their job search, finding a posting that says “You will be able to work in a progressive work environment that requires you to perform multiple duties with a wide variety of clients” is much more exciting!
  • Location, location, location! Often, candidates are looking for a job specific to their area. Always include the location of the job so that the right candidates can find you!

In general, use your job posting to explain why job seekers should choose you over the competition by showcasing your company’s history, values, products/services, and company culture. Get candidates excited about the job when describing the position’s duties and responsibilities by making it personable and clear. Then, post away!
