The job hunt has a reputation of being long and arduous. At Women in Leadership, we say don’t let it get you down! Here are 5 things you can do right now and make the most out of your job hunt and get the interviews you deserve!

  • Customize your resume and cover letter

Sending out generic resumés and cover letters are a big “NO.” If you are applying to many different companies, tailoring your resume and cover letter is a big must. Here are two simple methods to try right now:

  1. Rearrange the layout of your resume

with relevant experiences and skills to the job/company you are applying to. Rather than having to read past hundreds of generic resumés to answer why they should hire you, a potential employer can quickly see why you might be a better fit than the other applicants.

  2. Do your research and address your cover letter to a specific person.

Seeing their own name on a cover letter rather than “To Whom It May Concern” is a lot more personal and make them more likely to stop and look closer at your application.

  • Remain Optimistic

Optimism is a beautiful thing. It can allow you to remain resilient through difficult times and motivate you to take action. As positive psychologist, Michelle Gielan, explains, “the reason for this is that optimists generally expect good things to happen in the face of challenges and, most importantly, believe that their behavior matters for creating positive change.” Optimists are more likely to believe the negative times are temporary causing them to feel motivated to take action and change the outcome of the situation. So if you feel as though you aren’t getting the interviews you want, or have recently been rejected from a job, power through it! Remain optimistic for the future. Here’s 11 ways you can start thinking (and living) a positive life today!

  • Get Networking

Networking can be one of the hardest things you ever have to do. There are many who find networking a pain because it’s hard to talk to people you’ve never met, especially if they are a potential employer! That being said it is also one of the easiest ways to get yourself out there and learn more about the company and the positions they are offering. Networking gives you the chance to meet a potential employer (as well as other job seekers!) in a more casual atmosphere and gain a sense of character and who they are. Take a look at this list of some networking tips to get the conversation rolling!

  • Update Your Social Media

We live in a time in which your online presence is becoming increasingly more important and subject to scrutiny. Therefore, it is very important to update channels such as your Linkedin page and Facebook, while also ensuring there’s nothing too crazy in the photos you’re tagged in!  Here’s a list of things you can do to ensure you get noticed by your social media and catch that hiring manager’s attention!
