The Ministry of Forests is responsible for the stewardship of provincial Crown land and ensures the sustainable management of forest, wildlife, water and other land-based resources. The Ministry manages these resources in a manner that embraces economic, environmental and social goals of government.

As a Senior Resource Authorizations Technologist, you provide expertise and advice to others with a strong focus on overseeing and providing guidance to the work of other technical staff and contracted resources. This position is responsible for checking and approving residue and waste surveys/submissions, timber cruises and compilations, appraisal submissions and the quality assurance program for all major and minor licensees. You may also have an opportunity to broaden your natural resource experience by supporting other program areas within the Sunshine Coast District office on an as needed basis.

Job Requirements:

  • Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, with Forest Professionals BC (FPBC) as a Registered Forest Technologist (RFT) or similar professional designation. Note: immediately eligible for registration is defined as being able to transfer a current membership from an applicable jurisdiction to FPBC within six (6) months of employment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility is required before an offer of employment can be made.
  • Degree, diploma, or equivalent in a natural resource field.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent.

Preference may be given to candidates with one (1) or more of the following:

  • Two (2) or more years of forestry related experience.
  • Experience with specific forestry activities, such as timber harvesting cut-block development, forest road engineering, silviculture, and/or harvest operations.
  • Experience in tenure administration (i.e. cutting permits, road permits) appraisals, timber cruising, waste and residue, and/or scaling.

Provisos:

  • Conduct field work which may include travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in rough camp conditions and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Must be willing and able to withstand the rigors of fieldwork.
  • Must be willing to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Must be willing and able to travel in fixed and/or rotary winged aircraft and/or watercraft.

About this Position:
There is currently one (1) permanent, full time position available in Powell River.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week as per the Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
Applicants who do not fully meet the required qualifications may be considered for this position, but at a lower classification.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies in Powell River.

Applicants who do not meet the RFT requirement may be considered at a lower classification, subject to having their TFT, ASTFT, or related professional designation. Confirmation of registration/eligibility will be required before an offer of employment can be made.
