The Team
As a Permitting Archaeologist, you will join either the Transportation & Infrastructure or the Commercial & Resource Development team within the Archaeology Branch. These established teams, (each consisting of at least five professionals,  including subject matter experts, administrative staff, and operational managers,) are dedicated to the protection and stewardship of cultural heritage across the province. Working alongside Archaeology Branch leadership, ministry executive and our Consultation, Administration, and Policy teams, you will contribute to critical work that impacts the stewardship of irreplaceable cultural resources across the province, reconciliation with First Nations, Provincial policy, economic development and the broader public. The team fosters a collaborative environment, providing strong support and shared expertise in cultural resource stewardship.

The Role
In this role, you will administer Heritage Conservation Act permits, engage in meaningful consultation with First Nations on archaeology and cultural stewardship, and contribute to policy development. As an ambassador for archaeology in the province, your work will play a crucial role in preserving cultural heritage while supporting development projects. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

•    Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Archaeology, OR Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Anthropology with a specialization in Archaeology. 
•    Experience working with Indigenous communities and interested parties in a natural resource management or cultural resource management context.
•    A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in archaeological resource management, specifically research, field work and reporting, OR
•    An equivalent combination of post-graduate training and experience may be considered.

Preference may be given to applicants with one (1) or more of the following:
•    A related Master’s Degree or Doctorate.
•    Three (3) or more years’ experience working with Indigenous communities.
•    Hold, or be eligible to hold, Heritage Conservation Act permits, or equivalent (i.e., permits from other jurisdictions).
•    Five (5) or more years’ experience in archaeological resource management, particularly experience working in the Northwest Coast, and/or the Interior Plateau, and/or Subarctic/Boreal Forest culture areas.

Proviso(s)/Willingness statement(s)
•    Willing and able to travel and conduct field inspections, which may include travel to remote areas and outdoor work in all weather conditions.
•    Have or be able to obtain a Class 5 BC Driver’s License.

About this Position:
Currently there are two (2) temporary opportunities available until  March 31, 2025.
This position can be based out of any of the locations listed above.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies.
