The Team:
The Stewardship Team is a dedicated group of Registered Professional Foresters passionate about sustainable forest management and environmental stewardship. With a broad range of forestry experience, this established team includes three Stewardship Foresters and one Stewardship Officer, and we’re looking to welcome a fourth Stewardship Forester. Our primary work functions include managing reforestation efforts, forest practice evaluations, and Forest Stewardship Plan reviews, making a significant impact on natural resource management. The Stewardship Team works alongside teams such as First Nations, GIS, Wildfire Risk Reduction, Wildfire Recovery and Authorization. The Stewardship Team provides expert advisory services in key areas like reforestation, forest harvesting, forest health, fire management, and ecosystem restoration.

The Role:
As a Stewardship Forester, you will play a vital role in shaping forest management practices within the Okanagan Shuswap Natural Resource District. This role primarily involves managing reforestation efforts, contract management, conducting and analysing forest practices, and administering Forest Stewardship Plan reviews and adjudications. There is also a minor component of applying your expertise to support and guide the development of procedures, policies, forest management practices, evaluating resource use applications, consulting with stakeholders and First Nations, and making recommendations for decision-makers. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a Registered Professional Forester, with Forest Professionals British Columbia (FPBC). Note: immediately eligible for registration is defined as being able to transfer a current membership from an applicable jurisdiction to FPBC within six (6) months of employment. Applicants currently registered with FPBC as an ASFIT or FIT (or able to transfer their current ASFIT/FIT membership to FPBC within six (6) months of employment) may be considered for this position at the Licensed Science Officer 1A level. Confirmation of registration/eligibility is required before an offer of employment can be made.
  • Degree in the natural resource field or equivalent as recognized by Forest Professionals BC.
  • Operational forest management work experience.
  • Experience in engaging with stakeholders/partners in natural resource management.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent.

Preference may be given to those with one (1) or more of the following:

  • Operational forest management work experience in BC or Alberta.
  • Work experience in one or more of the following areas of forestry: forest tenures, silviculture, harvest operations, permitting, planning, integrated resource management, or forestry contract administration.
  • GIS applications experience.
  • Operational and strategic forest landscape level planning experience.
  • First Nations’ engagement experience.
  • Client service experience.
  • Experience with government information systems (Reporting Silviculture Updates and Landstatus Tracking System (RESULTS), Forest Tenure Administration (FTA), Forest Stewardship Plans (FSP), etc.).

Provisos:

  • Meet safety standards of WorkSafe BC.
  • May be required to operate a variety of equipment.
  • Conduct field work which may include travel to remote areas by vehicle, boat, air or foot, overnight or extended stay in rough camp conditions and outdoor work in all weather conditions.

About this Position:
There is currently one (1) permanent, full time position available in Vernon.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies in Vernon.
