The Team
The Electricity Policy Branch (EPB) is a dynamic and collaborative team within the Ministry of Energy and Climate Solutions Electricity and Utility Regulatory Division (EURD). With 18 talented professionals, including policy analysts, economists, managers, and Indigenous relations leads, the EPB works on advancing electrification and reducing carbon emissions in B.C. by overseeing electricity policy, utility operations and build and maintain relationships with BC Hydro and the BC Utilities Commission. Our established team values diverse perspectives, equity, and inclusion as we tackle complex challenges to shape a low-carbon economy and electricity system, all while fostering a supportive environment where achievements are celebrated together.
The Role
As Senior Economist, you will play a pivotal role in advancing B.C.’s transition to a net-zero economy. By applying your expertise in electricity transmission and trade, you’ll provide strategic economic research and policy recommendations that shape the future of clean energy infrastructure in the province. This role offers the opportunity to collaborate with diverse partners, including government, industry, regulators, First Nations, and environmental groups, to address complex challenges and drive investment in renewable energy and transmission infrastructure. Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- A Master’s Degree in Economics or a related field such as statistics, mathematics, business administration, commerce, public administration, engineering, natural resource management or equivalent.
- Five years of related work experience in natural resource and energy industry analysis.
- At least two years of experience in policy analysis and development, legislative processes and inter-governmental procedures.
- Experience in economic, social, or environmental impact analysis, evaluations, and making recommendations related to the energy industry in a Ministry or significant program area.
- Experience preparing briefing materials, legislative documents, Treasury Board and Cabinet submissions and public presentations.
Preference may be given to candidates with:
- Electricity market experience related to the analysis of fundamental market conditions and drivers impacting power markets in the Western Interconnect;
- Experience supervising staff including the assignment and evaluation of work and fostering the development and growth of employees;
- Education or work experience directly related to energy policy or clean fuels; and/or
- Demonstrated experience in quantitative analysis.
