The Team
Join the Fire Weather Forecast Team, an established group of up to 7 staff, providing critical weather forecasts that impact wildfire decision-making and safety. You’ll work in a hybrid, collaborative environment where your expertise directly supports wildfire response, making a real-world difference.
As a regional weather expert on a provincial forecasting team, your insights will directly support BC Wildfire’s safety and decision-making. If you’re passionate about weather and enjoy teaching, this role offers a chance to make a meaningful impact while valuing diverse perspectives.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- BSc degree in Meteorology; or qualification as an Operational Meteorologist through a recognized educational institute; OR,
- An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.
- Experience using meteorological theory to improve upon or discount raw model output of temperature, wind, relative humidity, stability, and/or precipitation.
- Valid Class 5 drivers licence.
Preference may be given to applicants with the following:
- Experience in operational weather forecasting with direct interaction with the user/client.
- Experience tailoring forecast to specific client needs.
- Experience identifying and applying the strengths and weaknesses of a variety of different computer weather models, especially in/around complex terrain.
- Experience working with the Canadian Forest Fire Danger Rating System (CFFDRS)
- Completed S-490 /Advanced Wildland Fire Behaviour or equivalent.
- Experience with fire weather forecasting and/or fire behaviour theory.
- Experience forecasting in mountainous terrain.
Provisos and Willingness Statements:
- To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments and corporate structures.
- To keep current on emerging issues.
- To take in-house training and certification as required.
- To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required.
- To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan.
- To travel and overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required.
- To participate in Incident Command System positions as assigned.
- To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions.
- To travel overnight to meet business requirements.

2 Positions available.
Positions available in Williams Lake and Smithers.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement.
Flexible work options may not be available during emergency operations response periods.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future permanent vacancies.
A Criminal Record Check (CRC) will be required.
