The Programs and Services Team in the Heritage Branch is a dedicated group of professionals with expertise in cultural resource management, including heritage policy, toponymy, and fossil management. With a mix of long-standing and newer staff, our team brings a wealth of knowledge, diverse perspectives, and a strong sense of camaraderie to their work. Known across the province for their trusted advice and collaborative spirit, they play a vital role in advancing heritage protection and awareness through thoughtful policy, program delivery, and engagement.

The Role:
This rare opportunity offers a chance to lead the implementation of British Columbia’s Fossil Management Framework — an innovative approach to protecting fossil sites, preventing impacts, and supporting responsible access to fossil resources. Responsibilities include managing the BC Fossil Management System, issuing research permits, and working closely with researchers, industry, and communities to preserve fossils for their scientific, educational, and cultural value. As the only role of its kind in the province, it offers a meaningful way to shape fossil stewardship on a provincial and national scale.

Qualifications:
Education:

  • Registered, or immediately eligible for registration (within six (6) months of employment), as a Professional Agrologist (PAg) with the BC Institute of Agrologists (BCIA), or, as a Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC). Confirmation of registration/eligibility is required before an offer of employment can be made.
  • Degree in the natural resource field or equivalent as recognized by the relevant association.
  • Preference may be given to candidates with a Master’s Degree in Biology, Geology, or a related discipline with a focus on palaeontology.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.
  • Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent.

Experience:

  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience related to fossil management, paleontology, and/or lands and natural resource management.
  • Experience developing or applying policy, procedures or legislation related to fossil, natural resource, or heritage management.
  • Experience conducting site assessment and work related to paleontology and geology.

About this Position:
Amendment June 27th, 2025: posting closing date extended to July 18th, 2025.
There is currently one (1) permanent, full-time position available in Victoria.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to two (2) days at home per week subject to an approved Telework Agreement.
Employees of the BC Public Service must be located in BC at the time of employment.
An eligibility list may be established to fill future temporary and permanent vacancies in Victoria.
Applicants who do not fully meet the required qualifications may be considered for this position, but at a lower classification.
