The Team
The Strategic Wildfire Resiliency Planning Section, on behalf of the BC Wildfire Service, is the lead for strategic wildfire resiliency planning with the expressed purpose of developing and integrating wildfire resiliency and wildfire risk assessment principles into landscape and wildland urban interface planning in partnership and collaboration with other ministries and agencies, land and values managers, First Nations and Indigenous communities, local authorities, and industry. The team consists of planning officers, a wildfire risk reduction senior resource technologist, a wildfire prevention specialist, a landscape wildfire risk officer, and wildfire prevention technicians. Positioned to support government priorities, this close-knit team operates remotely across the province..
The Role
Reporting to the Fire and Fuel Management Officer, the Planning Officer, Wildfire Resiliency provides senior level expertise in Wildfire Resiliency to achieve a range of objectives, including wildfire risk reduction, ecosystem restoration, range and habitat enhancement, and silviculture. This role will work in partnership with organizations, government agencies, First Nations and Indigenous peoples, stakeholders and partners to develop and implement planning guidelines and strategies for WR projects at all levels. Candidates will be excited to lead efforts in wildfire education, mitigation, and response, while contributing to policy development, forest health, and community resiliency through the multi-faceted FireSmart program.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Registered, or immediately eligible for registration, as a fully licensed professional with the British Columbia professional association as required by the specialty area (i.e. Association of Forest Professionals, Institute of Agrologists, Association of Professional Engineers & Geoscientists). Note: Immediately eligible for registration is defined as being able to transfer a current membership from an applicable jurisdiction to the BC association within six (6) months of employment. Confirmation of registration/eligibility is required before an offer of employment can be made; AND
- A Technical Diploma in a natural resource management related field (e.g., Forestry, Geography, or Natural Resource Management); OR
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered; AND
- Two (2) or more years’ experience working in a natural resource discipline; AND
- Experience managing multiple projects or leading a component (e.g., sub-project) of a major project; AND
- Experience managing relationships with stakeholders and partners and leading consultation sessions; AND
- Experience implementing provincial land management planning processes; AND
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s Licence or equivalent.
Preference may be given to candidates with one of more of the following:
- Registered Professional Forester
- Fire/Fuel management experience
