The Role
The role of Correctional Instructor, Metal Shop, offers the opportunity to provide valuable trades-based instruction in carpentry and metal fabrication to inmates, helping them develop employable skills that contribute to their successful reintegration into the community. As an instructor, you’ll ensure the safety, care, and security of inmates during sessions, guide them through hands-on projects, and teach the proper use of equipment in line with safety standards. This position supports inmates in logging hours toward apprenticeship programs, preparing them for future employment, and empowering them to achieve personal goals for a positive impact on their lives and communities.
Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements
- Red Seal Trade Certification in a program related to Metalwork and Welding
- Five years’ experience working as a journeyperson in the field of Welding
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License
- Grade 12 or equivalent
- English 12 with a final grade of 70% or equivalent
- Valid Occupational First Aid (OFA 1) as endorsed by WorkSafe BC
- Successful completion of the Correctional Officer Physical Abilities Test (COPAT)
- Successful completion of enhanced security screening
- Successful completion of medical assessment
- Successful completion of employer sponsored Security Officer Training
Preference may be given to applicants with:
- Two years’ experience as a Correctional Officer or equivalent
- Experience in instructing adult learners and organizing the work of others
- Training in the areas of human behaviour and leadership techniques.
- Experience in an industrial or vocational setting
- Experience with computer and communication technology
- WHMIS certified
- Valid BC Class 4 Driver’s License
