About the BCLDB:

The BC Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB) is one of two branches of government that provide oversight for the beverage alcohol and non-medical cannabis industries in the province. The LDB’s Information Technology (IT) team consists of six competency areas: Enterprise Systems (from infrastructure to application portfolio management), Customer Experience, Enterprise Architecture, Data Analytics & Governance, Software Engineering, and Information Security. These five divisions managed by IT Directors collectively are responsible for all of the six competency areas to deliver the IT mandate of supporting LDB’s corporate and business operations and enabling future needs and initiatives.

At present, the IT team consists of more than 200 full-time employees and includes a sourcing strategy to leverage external expertise to ensure the integrated IT team continues to deliver LDB’s strategic initiatives timely and in high quality.

Key systems in use by the LDB include Infrastructure and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems which support our head office, BC Liquor Stores, and BC Cannabis Stores, and Supply Chain Management (SCM) and Warehouse Management (WMS) systems which support over 25,000 suppliers of liquor, cannabis products as well as 2,000 wholesale customers and 10,000 hospitality customers. 

About this role:

Reporting to the Manager, Database & Middleware, the Senior Middleware Specialist is responsible for providing the Liquor Distribution Branch (LDB) with expert technical direction and leadership concerning development, enhancement, installation, and maintenance of the organization’s mission critical Middleware portfolio (Jboss Middleware, Wildfly, Oracle OSB, Oracle SOA and Fusion Middleware etc.).  The position also contributes to LDB’s application architecture and enterprise architecture by providing and maintaining a middleware strategy.

This role may be required to work shift work and to be on standby. Overtime may be required to meet deadlines.

Position requirements:

Education and Experience:

A degree or diploma in information technology, computer science or related field with a minimum of three (3) years of recent, related experience*.

OR

A combination of recent related experience and education may be considered, i.e., five (5) years of recent, related experience* with formal courses and/or certificates in information technology, computer science or related field.

OR

Secondary (high) school diploma with a minimum of seven (7) years of recent, related experience*.

*Recent, related experience is defined as occurring in the last seven (7) years and requires experience with the following:

  • Progressive experience in middleware engineering, integration, or enterprise systems architecture.
  • Experience with relational databases, such as, Oracle, SQL Server or PostgreSQL.
  • Experience with Unix/Linux environments, preferably Red Hat Linux.

Preference may be given to candidates with any of the following:

  • Experience with Microsoft Azure Administration.
  • Experience with service bus technology, i.e., Mulesoft, OSB (Oracle Service Bus), etc.
  • Experience with Application Servers such as, Wildfly, Tomcat, WebLogic or JBoss.
  • Experience with Apache.
  • Experience with Service Oriented Architecture.
  • Experience with Enterprise Service Bus.
  • Experience with application fail-over strategy.
  • Experience with patching and upgrade Middleware, Applications and Databases including the regularly released Security patches.
