The Team
The Major Mines Office, Technical Operations, Geotechnical Engineering team is an established group of up to six senior geotechnical engineers. This team specializes in critical areas of mine site geotechnical engineering, such as tailings storage facilities, dams, open pits, underground mines, and waste rock dumps. Working collaboratively with environmental specialists, project managers, and Indigenous Nations representatives, the team plays a key role in ensuring safe, environmentally responsible mine development and closure, as well as providing timely permitting decisions. The Role
As a Senior Geotechnical Engineer you will play a crucial role in providing expert advice on the design, review, permitting, regulation, inspection, and compliance of geotechnical infrastructure at mine sites across BC. By ensuring safe and environmentally responsible mine development and closure, this position directly supports the mining industry and protects the environment. This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity to be deeply involved in the regulation of mining in the province, applying your technical expertise to a wide range of complex projects. You will collaborate with a diverse team of experts, ministries, and Indigenous Nations, all while making a significant, positive impact on the future of mining and environmental stewardship in BC.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in geological, mining or geotechnical engineering.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC) is required.  Registered Professional Engineers of another Canadian jurisdiction willing to commit to immediate registration with EGBC (if successful) will be considered for the competition.  
  • Minimum eight (8) years’ experience in geotechnical engineering or mining engineering.
  • A valid Class 5 driver’s licence or equivalent. 

Preference may be given to applicants with:

  • A Master’s degree or higher in geological, mining or geotechnical engineering.
  • Experience designing tailings storage facilities and dams, including oversight experience.
  • Experience designing open pits including oversight experience.
  • More than eight (8) years’ experience in geotechnical engineering or mining engineering.
  • Supervisory experience.
