PURPOSE OF POSITION
As part of the Destination Management Division, the General Manager, Vancouver, Coast & Mountains (VCM) plays a strategic role in driving and influencing business partner engagement with Destination BC’s programs and services specifically in the VCM tourism region. Key responsibilities for this position include overseeing the VCM tourism region contracts and programs (budget of $1Million) and leadership of the VCM team. The VCM tourism region is uniquely managed by Destination BC. The region expands outwards from Metro Vancouver along three main arteries: the Sunshine Coast, Sea-to-Sky Corridor, and the Fraser Valley and Fraser Canyon. The VCM tourism region aims to increase the net benefits of tourism, in the region, by acting as a service delivery agent for Destination BC programs and services as well as implementing regionally prioritized destination management projects.
The VCM tourism region is focused on renewal and resiliency. Reporting to the Director, Indigenous & Regional Partnerships, this position leads the delivery of regional services through the Vancouver, Coast & Mountains annual Business Plan. Continuing to support industry throughout VCM, and build our presence in the region, this position requires exceptional strategic planning, relationship building and resources management skills.
Providing strategic leadership in this position is required to align deliverables and resources with divisional and corporate goals, creating awareness of new initiatives, and developing team members. This leadership role will foster, influence, and maintain collaborative relationships with government, regional and industry partners to deliver on the goals set out for the Destination Management Division as part of the overall Destination BC strategy.
SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Lead the delivery of Destination BC programs, and regionally prioritized projects, within the VCM tourism region through the execution of the VCM annual Business Plan.
- Lead the implementation of the VCM Regional Operations Plan and the VCM Communications Strategy in alignment with the VCM annual Business Plan.
- Oversight, reporting and implementation of $2.1 million in small to medium sized tourism infrastructure projects, in the VCM tourism region, through StrongerBC’s Targeted Regional Tourism Development Initiative. Manage the coordination of all provincial government funding programs that are accessed through the tourism region, that directly support VCM destination development.
- Provides direction in the integrated regional planning process, representing VCM, with Destination BC on an annual basis.
- Maintain and build new relationships provincially and regionally with tourism industry businesses and partners by executing, attending, and participating in tourism industry events, representing Destination BC and the VCM region, promoting programs, gathering industry feedback, and making recommendations to the Director and applicable departments.
- Provide day-to-day business advisory support for VCM private and public sector partners, including program assistance and coaching/mentoring to help the tourism operators and Community Destination Marketing Organizations engaged in Destination BC’s programs and to improve their own business effectiveness.
- Facilitate consortium building and support Destination BC marketing efforts within VCM to promote the region domestically, nationally, and internationally through alignment and integration with Destination BC’s core marketing activities, consumer advertising and campaigns, co-operative marketing programs, content generation, and social media efforts.
- Act as the first point of contact, for the VCM tourism region, for the provincial Tourism Emergency Response Team (TERT) when activated and lead in local emergency response through providing connections between emergency operations centres and tourism operators for emergency support services (ESS) and visitor redirection.
- Support reconciliation by coaching, advising, and providing oversight of Indigenous Tourism British Columbia (ITBC) VCM Indigenous Specialist.
- Negotiate, manage, and monitor contracts, evaluate contractor performance, and approve or terminate contracts.
- Identify and respond to issues, drafts confidential briefing materials, submissions, and other documentation with respect to industry program areas and policy issues to CEO/VP/Director, executive, and ministry staff.
- Provides supervision, mentoring and coaching for staff and implements performance management, career growth, succession planning, recognition, employee development and other human resource initiatives.
- Attends Annual General Meetings of the Community Destination Management Organizations in the VCM tourism region as a DBC representative.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Completion of Post-secondary education in tourism, business or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- A minimum of five years experience supervising, coaching, and mentoring staff.
- A minimum of five years experience in developing and maintaining strategic relationships with a diverse group of partners and stakeholders.
- A minimum of five years experience in planning, implementing, and delivering on broad-reaching programs and initiatives.
- Experience in developing and managing financial resources to deliver on goals.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and collaborate strategically with a wide variety of business partners.
- Proven experience in project management along with strong organizational abilities to manage a number of complex issues while still delivering results
- Knowledge of the BC tourism industry.
