The Team
The Communications and Engagement team at the Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) provides internal and external communication support for the important work of the office to promote sustainability, protect the environment, and uphold community well-being. We are committed to fostering transparent, accessible, and effective public communications and engagement to ensure meaningful public participation in environmental assessments.
We are a tight knit, highly skilled team of eight professionals who lead the development of communications policies and strategies, managing media relations, briefing senior leaders, supporting executive messaging, and overseeing public engagement efforts. We collaborate closely with EAO’s senior leadership, project assessment teams, s, Digital Services’ developers, and policy staff, as well as federal counterparts and other communications teams across the provincial government.
The Role
At the Environmental Assessment Office, the new Engagement Specialist will play a key role in designing inclusive engagement strategies that empower communities to have their voices heard in the environmental assessment process. By creating plain language materials and using a variety of digital and in-person tools, this role ensures that the public can easily understand the impacts of proposed projects and provide meaningful feedback. This work has a direct impact on how the public helps shape decisions that protect the environment, promote sustainability, and support reconciliation with Indigenous communities, while fostering positive outcomes for British Columbians. The team plays a crucial information role in supporting EAO’s mission by ensuring public understanding and participation on major projects and fostering trust in the EAO’s regulatory role.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in public engagement – related field ( e.g. Communications, Public Relations, Business Administration, Psychology or Public Administration) or equivalent combination of *related experience, education and/or training.
*Must include minimum of 2 years’ related experience in each of the following:
- Experience working in a role primarily or fully responsible for communications and/or public engagement.
- Experience in creating effective engagement surveys
- Experience gathering and interpreting engagement-related data from diverse sources using various tools and techniques (e.g. statistical software, survey administration, in-person consultation, data visualization tools).
- Experience writing reports, briefings and public facing communications and /or engagement materials for various audiences.
Preferences may be given to applicants with the following:
- Certification in IAP2 and/or courses/training in public engagement, public relations or communications.
- Experience using web content management systems.
- Project management experience.
- Experience working within the natural resource sector.

About this Position:
This is a temporary position until April 1, 2026 This position may be extended or become permanent.
Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
An eligibility list may be established to fill both current and/or future permanent vacancies.
